Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO) has signed an agreement with Ras Girtas Power Company for supplying 15000 ton annually of aqueous ammonia to be used for power generation at Ras Laffan Power Plant. Qafco’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director Mr. Khalifa Abdullah Al-Sowaidi signed the agreement at Qafco Doha office on Wednesday with Mr. Faisal Obeid Al-Siddiqi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Ras Laffan Power Plant. Senior executives from both companies attended the agreement-signing event. Aqueous ammonia is a chemical compound composed of 19% of ammonia and it is used as an agent for absorbing nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions generated from gas utilization and burning natural gas in power generating stations and industrial plants.
In 2009 Qafco established in its compound in Mesaieed a facility with an annual production capacity of 60,000 ton for producing aqueous ammonia. Qafco utilizes
part of this quantity for removing nitrogen oxides generated from industrial activities in the company’s plants that produce ammonia, urea and melamine. After signing the agreement, Mr. Khalifa Al-Sowaidi said, “Establishment of this unit for producing aqueous ammonia complements Qafco’s strong commitment and confirms recognition of its important role in protecting our environment and keeping it free of pollutants, harmful industrial emissions and helping other actors to do the same. Qafco intends to supply aqueous ammonia to various companies and gas-operated industrial plants in Qatar to utilize it as an agent for removing nitrogen dioxides and reducing its levels in the air to comply with the Qatari environmental regulations. Qafco expects to sign a similar agreement next week with Mesaieed Power Company to be followed by agreements with a number of leading companies in the near future”.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Faisal Al Obeid said, “Ras Girtas was committed towards a clean environment, and with this objective it was happy to be partnering with QAFCO to produce clean energy for a sustainable environment”.
